    Improved Sound
    The sound from this "
    3rd generation
" system has been greatly improved over the previous generations, by using the process called
    Brass Resonance Modeling.
    This utilizes
    three
simultaneous processes to produce the realistic tone of the brass instrument. This unique technology by Yamaha uses the modeling of non-muted brass instruments to correct your instrument’s tone when the Pickup Mute is in place. With a combination of The
    Personal Studio
    and a
    Pickup Mute
, the resulting sound is so realistic, it’s hard to tell whether the instrument is muted, or not.
    1.
    Eliminate the “Mute” Sound
Digital processing applied to the sound received by the mute’s
microphone effectively cancels the sonic characteristics of the mute.
    2. Add Ambience
Another digital process brings back the natural sound of the un-muted instrument, and adds the characteristics of the acoustic environment through which the sound travels before returning to the player’s ears, making it sound as if you are playing without a mute at all.
    3. Adjust Left/Right Balance
Digitally simulating how the sound returns to your ears—adjusting for the slight differences in volume, timbre, and delay between your left and right ears—and adding reverb constructs a virtual sound scape that makes it sound like you are playing in a large room or concert hall.
    Aux In Jack
This jack allows an external sound source to be combined with the signal coming from the mute, such as an MP3 player, Tablet, Cell phone or CD Player. You can then play along with your favorite song in practice and performance settings, putting the fun back in your practice sessions.
    Mute In Jack
    - The
    mute "input" jack
allows a quick and easy connection to any of the 6 new
    Silent Brass Mutes
    .
    Phones Jack
    - The
    headphone "output" jack
allows the Silent Brass system to be connected to earphones for private practice, an external sound system for sound reproduction, or to a recording system for public performance and recording.

    Compatibility:
    ST7
    Total compatibility of these systems.
The first Yamaha Silent Brass system that came out was  the ST7 Module coupled with the PM1 - PM9 Mutes.
    PM1 - PM9 Mutes
    ST9
    Total compatibility of these systems.
    Next came the ST9 & ST5 Modules
    that utilized the same Mutes.
    The ST7, ST5 & ST9 are all compatible with
    all of the PM1-PM9 Mutes.
    ST5
    STX
Yamaha has now produced the next generation system for Silent Brass using a new technology called
    Brass Resonance Modeling™.
The system consist of the STX module (left) and the PM3X-PM7X Mutes (right)
To properly make the Brass Resonance Modeling™ work, it must use the new STX module with any of the new following mutes:
    PM3X - PM7X.
You can use the new PM1X and PM2X mutes with the STX module, however, the sound is not as full as with the new STX-2 module.
The (PM3X - PM7X) Mutes can still work with the old modules (ST7, ST5, ST9),
    BUT
you will not get full effect of
    Brass Resonance Modeling™ technology.
Technically, you do not have to upgrade and buy the new system if you are just wanting to add one of these new mute (pictured to the right) to use with your old module
    .
    (Yamaha no longer makes the
    PM1- PM9 Mutes.)
    Currently, Yamaha
    is not
selling the STX module separately from the mutes.
You WILL NOT be able to use your old
PM1 - PM9 mutes with this STX module.
    PM3X - PM7X
    STX-2
Yamaha has now produced an updated module called, STX-2.
All mutes (pictured to the right) our fully compatible with the new STX-2 module.
This new module was needed when the new Tuba and Euphonium system were created.
To properly make the Brass Resonance Modeling™ work, it must use the new STX-2 module with any of the new
    PM1X - PM7X Mutes.
The PM3X - PM7X Mutes can still work with the old modules (ST7, ST5, ST9),
    BUT
you will not get full effect of
    Brass Resonance Modeling™ technology.
When using the new PM1X & PM2X with the old modules (ST7, ST5, ST9) you will find that the sound is there, but a there is lot of buzz. You'll have to turn the volume way down to make it even remotely usable.
    Currently, Yamaha
    is now
selling the STX-2 module separately from the mutes.
You WILL NOT be able to use your old
    PM1 - PM9 mutes with the new STX-2 module.
